Withdraw AFSPA from J&K, Manipur: SDPI
New Delhi: The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has called upon the Union Government to immediately withdraw Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) from Jammu & Kashmir and Manipur.
The resolution, passed at the National Working Committee (NWC) of SDPI, appealed to initiate dialogue with leaders who really represent the Kashmiri people and bring about an honorable solution acceptable to all. The NWC meeting was presided over by SDPI president E.Abubacker.
According to A. Sayeed, General Secretary SDPI, this is among the five resolutions which was adopted in the NWC meeting of SDPI held here on Sunday. The resolution said that the draconian powers conferred on the security forces by the AFSPA have been proved to be the single most important source of horrible rights violations in Kashmir and Manipur. The resolution reminded the authorities that popular struggles cannot be crushed by mere military or police action as proved in Kashmir and such places. Since June 2010 more than 100 innocent people have been killed in the Valley. The ongoing agitation is the reflection of the wide spread anger and agony of common man against presence of security forces which have harshly wrought havoc in the peaceful life of the people.
Sayeed told this correspondent that in an another resolution the NWC meeting appreciated the stand of Muslims that they would accept any verdict on the title suit of the Babri Masjid. It also hoped that the Government will take stern action against the Hindutva fascist forces who want to make political capital out of the issue through actions intended to destroy communal peace in the country.
The NWC meeting expressed deep anguish and sorrow for the victims of heavy floods in India and abroad specially in neighbouring Pakistan. The meeting shared the grief and bereavement of the families who have lost near and dear ones in flood and congratulated the Government of India for their timely offer of assistance to Pakistan and hoped that Pakistan would positively respond to this gesture of goodwill, another resolution said.
He said that two other resolutions were on distribution of food grains to the hungry and the needy as per the Supreme Court order and reservation to Muslims and other minorities which were passed unanimously on the occasion.
A Parliamentary Board of SDPI was constituted in the NWC meeting.The members include:
E. Abubacker, A. Sayeed, Adv. Sajid Siddiqui, Mohammad Umar Khan, Prof. P. Koya, K. M. Shareef, Hafiz Manzoor Ali and M. K. Faizee. The Board will take policy decisions on elections,finalise candidates for parliamentary and legislative assembly polls and whether to form alliances or not for contesting elections etc.
It was decided in the NWC meeting to hold state conferences in various states. The state conferences in West Bengal, Karnataka and Kerala will be held in February next year. Earlier,A. Sayeed, general secretary SDPI, presented working report in the meeting for the period from April 19 to September 18 this year.
