  • Left-Right Fronts 'Popularised' Corruption in Kerala: SDPI

Kozhikkode: Two political fronts in Kerala- UDF and LDF have toppled the very concept of Grama Panchayaths which was conceptualised as the corner stone of decentralisation, alleged Adv. K P Muhammed Shareef, state president of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI). He was speaking at a function of declaring SDPI candidate for local body elections in Kozhikkode district here yesterday.
It's mandatory that Grama Sabhas should be convened once in every three months. And at least 10 percent of the total members which are total voters of a ward should be present in the meeting. The meeting should be announced a week before. But all these things which are stipulated by our constitution are ignored by the political parties whose representatives are in power now, said Mauhammed Sahreef.
The decisions taken by the Garama Sabhas regarding the preferential order of beneficiaries of various programs can not be altered even by the Panchayaths. At the same time the parties are vying each other to topple these Garama Sabhas for the sake of corruption and nepotism, he added. He also alleged that the concept of people's planning had helped for the decentralisation of corruption. Even a panchayath member could commit corruption under the guise of these projects.
The BOT system which has been adopted by the governments in developmental activities is nothing but a means to fill the pocket of political leaders. Now both fronts in Kerala are trying to reach election understandings in various places.
He also said that SDPI have entered the fray as a prelude to bring about a change in which all the people of the country would be free from hunger and fear. For this the party has put forward a clear cut policy of anti corruption and anti fascism.
He also hoped that SDPI could contribute a lot in a fight for the popular panchayaths that are free from corruption and discrimination.
District vice president A T Abu Haji presided over the function.
SDPI has also declared the names of 182 candidates in Kozhikkode corporation and grama panchayaths.
