  • 100 activists held for staging 'rail roko' in Madurai


    Madurai: Police Wednesday arrested over 100 activists of various political parties and other organizations including Social Democratic Party of India, Popular Front of India when they attempted to stage a 'rail roko' agitation to express their solidarity with the six lawyers of Madurai Bench of Madras High Court, who are on a fast-unto-death agitation demanding that Tamil be made official language of High Court, here today. 
    The activists of Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Naam Tamilar, Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, Social Democratic Party of India, Popular Front of India, besides students of Government Law College here were rounded up by the police, before they could enter into the Madurai Railway Junction.
    The agitators came in several batches to the railway junction and raised slogans demanding the Centre to declare Tamil as the official language of the High Court. A large number of policemen were deployed in front of the railway junction in view of the agitation. Meanwhile, about 100 volunteers of VCK, led by their leader Pandiyammal staged a slogan shouting demonstration in front of the High Court complex here for similar demand.
