  • SDPI Demands bifurcation of Malappuram district

Malappuram: Social Democratic Party of India demands bifurcation of Malappuram district in Kerala and form separate Tirur district. In a press conference conducted at Malappuram, state leaders of the party said that they would lead public campaign in this regard till the demand was met.
We will submit memorandum raising the demand for a new district to the chief minister and local administration minister, said P Abdul Majeed Faizee, general secretary of state SDPI.
The party came forward with this demand bearing in mind the high population of the district, its wide geographical area and overall backwardness of the region.
Leaders claimed that majority of the people in the district is in favor of bifurcation. A recent survey conducted by the party among the people has endorsed this demand, leaders said.
The formation of Tirur district will help the people of the area enjoy the fruits of decentralization. The people of the area think that bifurcation would enhance development of the whole region, Faizee said.
The Malappuram district formed in 1969 is having most number of grama panchyaths and assembly constituencies. While considering the area, though it’s at third place, Idukki district which is area-wise at second place is having population 2.5 million less than that of Malappuram. The leaders also said that new district should be comprised of Taluks including Tirur, Ponnani and Thirurangadi. The total population of the aforesaid area will come to 1.8 million. Area-wise, remaining Malappuram district will come at 7th place with 2,559 square km.
State secretary V T Ikramul Haq, district president M Bapu Master, general secreatary P M Basheer, vice president T P M Saidalikkutty and secretary Jaleel Neelambra also participated in the press conference.
